PORTO SANTO STEFANO – ARGENTARIO – TUSCANY

PRIVATE TOUR AROUND ROME WITH ADEL KARANOV ROME GUIDE WITH CAR AND COMPOSER

PORTO SANTO STEFANO is the more developed of the Argentario resorts, and also the more fashionable – which in Italy is a lot worse than just being popular. Something of the charm which first brought people here still shines through, however, despite the hotels and villas that have all but obliterated the original village.

A few fishing boats still cluster in the town’s smaller harbour, having relinquished the main port to the marina and its mega-yachts. If you’re on a budget, you’ll probably stay only as long as it takes to get a ferry to the island of Giglio (see opposite). Information and sailing times are available from the quayside TO.RE.MAR office (•0564.810.803), or the neighbouring Maregiglio (.0564.812.920), or the tourist office at Corso Umberto 55a (daily: summer 8am-2pin & 4-6.30pm; winter Sam-2pm). Boats make the one-hour trip three times daily year-round, five times daily in summer (one-way tickets LI0,000 for foot passengers, L50,000-75,000 for cars). Buses run to the port from the train station at Orbetello Scalp, so you can avoid almost any contact with the place at all.

porto santo stefano - tuscany car excursionsAffordable accommodation does exist, though mainly in private rooms, for which the tourist office supplies lists. You’ll need to book well ahead to secure a place at either of the town’s cheaper hotels: the central Da Alfiero, Via Cuniberti 14 (•0564.814.067, fax 0564.813.094; C)), and less convenient Week End, Via Martiri d’Ungheria 3 (• & fax 0564.812.580; 03). If money is no object, try Porto Santo Stefano’s finest, the three-star Belvedere (•0564.812.634; (i), near the beaches at Poggio Calvella, a short may west. The nearest campsites are those listed in the Orbetello entry, on previous page. Restaurants are generally swanky and overpriced; back-street piaerie and bar snacks are the best options. If you’re going for a blowout, Da Siro, Corso Umberto I 102 (.0564.812.538; closed Mon & Nov), has quite a reputation. La Bussola, Piazzale Facchinetti (.0564.814.225; closed Mon) is good for fish, or try La Formica, one of the more popular and reasonable fish restaurants, at Pozzerella, 1500m east of the village (•05(14.814.205).

ORBETELLO – ARGENTARIO – TUSCANY

TUSCANY INDIVIDUAL CAR TOUR FROM ROME

Orbetello and its lagoon. ORBETELLO is principally distinguished by its strange location on a narrow isthmus in the middle of the Laguna di Orbetello. little in the place excites real attention, but it has become something of a resort, thanks to its being the gateway to the dramatic rocky out-crop of Monte Argentario.

Orbetello – Tuscany individual excursions

On summer weekends, it becomes a bottleneck, as cars full of tourists pile in to Porto Ercole and Porto San Stefano, the Argentario’s supposedly chic resorts. As well as seafront attractions, the Orbetello area offers much to naturalists, its lagoon boasting a nature reserve known as the Italian birdwatchers’ El Dorado. The train station is 4Icm away at Orbetello Scab, on the mainland edge of the lagoon, a prominent stop for trains on the Rome-Pisa line. There are connections for Siena and slow trains to smaller stations to the north and south. Connecting buses run from the station to the bus terminal just off Piazza della Repubblica, from here there are regular services to Grosseto, Porto Ercole and Porto San Stefano, as well as daily buses to Capalbio and Pitigliano.

The Town Orbetello is an unassuming and pleasant place, gram’ with palm trees, the pastel-coloured remnants of Spanish walls, and a main street – the Corso Italia – thronged each evening with a particularly vigorous passeggista. It was probably Etruria’s leading port, though little evidence of its ancient past remains except fora few blocks of Etruscan wall underwater near the causeway. The Byzantines took advantage of its easily defended position, holding out longer here than anywhere else on the Tyrrhenian coast. Thereafter the papacy gained control, and did not relinquish it until 1559, when the Spanish established a military Presidio with Orbetello as its capital. The town’s last claim to fame was as the headquarters of Mussolini’s seaplane squadrons; the surviving aircraft hangar is one of Tuscany’s more bizarre architectural attractions. The Spanish fortifications are the town’s conspicuous feature, and a fine example of military architecture. The elegant arsenal, the PoWeriera de Guzman, houses a small archeological museum. Nearby, the dooms in Piazza della Repubblica appears promising with its lovely Gothic facade, only to disappoint with a grim Baroque interi-or. Orbetello’• lively street market is held on Saturdays.

The Maremma – Tuscny car excursions from Rome

The Maremma — the coastal plain that runs south from the Piombino headland — was the northern heartland of the Etruscans, whose drainage and irrigation canals turned it into an area of huge agricultural potential. Their good work, however, was largely lost under the Romans, who abandoned much of the land and left it to revert to marsh — a decline that continued through the Middle Ages, when war and further dereliction turned the region into a malarial swamp. For years, virtually the only inhabitants were migrant charcoal burners and shepherds (who in summer abandoned the infested lowlands for the hill-villages of Amiata — and the famous butteri, the cowboys who tend the region’s oxen and horses. Modern attempts to revive the Maremma were started in 1828 by Grand Duke Leopoldo of Tuscany, who instigated new drainage schemes and introduced a crude health service, with free quinine for malaria sufferers. At the turn of last century, though, Grosseto’s regional council still had to more its offices annually to the healthier surroundings of Scansano, and real progress only began under Mussolini, The malarial mosquito was finally banished in 1950, and something of the Maremma’s grim legacy Ives on in its common Italian nickname, La Miseria.

Maremma Toscana Italy car toursDrainage has returned a measure of prosperity to the Maremma, but at the cost of destroying its ancient landscapes and prompting the expansion of Grosseto, one of Tuscany’s more miserable towns. A few efforts have been made to preserve the old world, mainly in the Monti dell’Uccellitta but also in the nature reserves at Ennui(‘ and Orbetello, two of the finest birdwatching spots in the country.

Maremma Toscana castelloYou’ll also stand a chance of seeing wild boar; a hoary-skinned sub-species (Sus scropha majors) of which has developed in isolated, swamp-encircled habitats. There are plenty of seaside diversions here as well, with glorious beaches at Marina di Alberese and in the Uccellina, and moderately upmarket resorts at Punta Ala and around Monte Argentario. Increasingly well known are the idyllic island of Giglio, via ited from the Argentario, and the area around the Lazio border, both suffering slow col-onization by Rome’s bourgeoisie. Massa Marittima is the area’s most historically interesting town, its medieval centre a fine example of Romanesque architecture.Almost everything you’ll want to see

The island of Giglio – Isola del Giglio

Isola del Giglio - Tuscany car toursThe largest of the Tuscan islands after Elba, GIGLIO is visited by an ever-increasing number of foreign tourists and is . popular with Romans that in high season there’s standing room only on the boats. Yet it’s well worth making the effort to stay on this fabulous island. The rush is fairly short-lived, most visitors are day-trippers, and few of them explore the tracks acr6ig tliaiispoilt interior, a mix of barren rock and reforest-ed upland. The island is rich in fauna such as peregrine falcons, mouflon, kestrels and buzzards, and in wild flowers too — this is the only place outside North Africa to shel-ter wild mustard, and the sole spot in Tuscany to support the yellow flowers of artemisia.

Isola del giglio maps - Tuscany private toursThe island derives its name not from giglio Oily), but from the Roman colon Aegilium, in its day a resort for the rich and famous, a function it continued to fulfil throughout most of the Middle Ages. Gnite qu’irries kept the economy buoyant, and Giglio stone was used to construct many rg.dieval churches. Later, pirate incursions took the edge off its appeal, despite the miraculous defensive power of St Mamiliano’s right arm, a relic hacked from a sixth-century Sicilian bishop exiled on the island of Montecristo. The limb proved effective when waved at Tunisian pirates in 1799, but less no on other occasions notably in 1534, when Barbarossa carried oft most of the island’s population.

Tarot Garden – Giardino dei Tarocchi –  Niki de Saint Phalle

Excursion from Rome to Capalbio Tuscany with car and guide
Influenced by Gaudí’s Parc Güell in Barcelona, and Parco dei Mostri in Bomarzo, as well as Palais Idéal by Ferdinand Cheval, and Watts Towers by Simon Rodia, Saint Phalle decided that she wanted to make something similar; a monumental sculpture park created by a woman. In 1979, she acquired some land in Garavicchio, Tuscany, about 100 km north-west of Rome along the coast. Niki de Saint Phalle has created a large number of “Nanas” in her career with different materials, in different shapes and dimensions. The garden, called Giardino dei Tarocchi in Italian, contains sculptures of the symbols found on Tarot cards. The garden took many years, and a considerable sum of money, to complete. It opened in 1998, after nearly 20 years of work. Her main benefactor of the period was the Agnelli family.

The Niki Charitable Art Foundation was created by Niki de Saint Phalle and became officially active upon her death. It represents the artist’s personal collection of more than 1,000 sculptures and 5,000 graphic works of art. The Foundation maintains the artwork and archives and holds the intellectual property rights for them. The Foundation acts as a link and point of contact for all projects related to Niki de Saint Phalle.

From its collection, the Foundation makes artwork available to museums throughout the world for exhibitions.

Ansedonia – Tuscany car tours

Ansedonia and Lago di Burano ANSEDONIA crouches under a rocky crag at the end of the Tombolo di Feniglia. Peppered with holiday villas, it has a long beach and, on the hill-top above the village, the remains of Cosa, founded by the Romans in 273 BC as a frontier post against the Etruscans. It was one of their most important commercial centres in the area until its population — according to the historian Rutilius — was driven out by an army of mice. Most of the old municipium was devastated by the Visigoths in the fourth century, and what survived was sacked by the Sienese in 1330. Recent excavations have exposed enough of the Roman colony to suggest some idea of its former layout. To reach the site, leave Ansedonia on the road east, passing a couple of medieval towers (converted into houses) and the so-called Tagliata Etrusca, a none-too-exciting series of cuts into the rock, believed to have been part of a system to drain the marsh-land.

Ansedonia - Tuscany car excursions
Ansedonia town – Tuscany car tour from Rome

After about a kilometre, where the road bends sharp right, there’s a signed track to Cosa off to the left. You’ll find a ring of walls eight metres high in places, the remains of a defensive cordon of eighteen towers. There’s also the outline of the gridiron street plan, a forum (with basilica and senate discernible nearby), two temples and some recently uncovered mosaics and wall paintings. It’s worth climbing to the top of the hill, not only to see the remains of the acropolis, but also for line views across to Giannutri and Monte Argentario. If you need a local place to stay, there’s a hotel near the Tagliata, the two-star Vinicio, Via delle Mimose 86 (•0564.881.220, fax 0564.881.604;3). The best of Ansedonia’s restaurants is the quiet 11 Pescatore, Via della Tagliata (•0564.881.201; closed Tues).
Lago di Burano You can walk to the Lago di Burano along the beach from Ansedonia, or catch a slow train from Orbetello to Capalbio Scalo, less than 100m from the water. Technically a lagoon rather than a lake, Burano is a placid stretch of water, shielded from the sea by vegetation-covered dunes. Completing the scenic picture — which is captivating at dusk with the sun behind Monte Argentario — is a superb and mysterious-looking tower, the Torre di Burinaccio.
