SANTA MARIA DELLA VITTORIA – ROMA
GIAN LORENZO BERNINI, ECSTASY OF SAINT TERESA SANTA MARIA DELLA VITTORIA
VIDEO of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome Original music by Adel Karanov private guide and music composer in Rome
In the Cornaro chapel, Bernini accomplished one of his most extraordinary artistic feats, creating a monument which has a remarkable theatrical and illusionistic power. The theme of the chapel was the ecstasy of the Spanish saint, Teresa, who was famed for the unusual spiritual experiences through which she attained mystic union with Christ. The artist had no trouble portraying the saint in a state of rapture, but the pose is so sensual that the spiritual nature of the event is lost on many observers. It is as if the saint is suspended on a bed of clouds, whose base, because it is darker and placed further back, is at first glance invisible, giving the impression that the marble cloud really is suspended in the air. However the main theatrical and illusory effect is achieved by the role Bernini so wisely gave to the natural light. Behind the sculpture he created a small semi-circular apse, which projects from the wall of the church. This enabled him to open a window, which is invisible to people looking at the chapel, at the top of the little apse.
To emphasise the symbolic value of the light, he added a series of gilded rays, which reflect and enhance the light entering through the little window. The effect was intended to appear supernatural. Bernini had turned the chapel into a theatrical stage with many spectators: the patron, the Venetian cardinal, Federico Camaro, and his ancestors. In their half-length portraits, they peer from the side boxes as if invited to share in the miraculous event, and seem to cast intent and admiring glances on the drama unfolding on the stage — the central group of the saint with the angel who is about to transfix her with a dart. In a sense this work is a symbol of the baroque itself: sculpture, light, architecture and painting are fused in a unique tableau of awe and wonder; tangible reality and the illusion of space are indistinguishable and art and imagination are as one.
