MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS NATIONAL MUSEUM in ROME

The collection of musical instruments covers a very wide period (from the archaeological instruments to the 19th c.), and gathers both the European production — the best nudeus in the collection — and that coming from the other continents. In 1949 the tenor Evan Gorga, a keen collector, gave over 3000 musical instruments to the State. The archaeological section belongs to the Kirche Collection. At the entrance there is the musical instrument invented and painted by Giacomo Balla in Futurist style. On the first floor the collections are arranged chronologically and by typology. The first rooms, on the left, contain archaeological instruments flanked by sculptural fragment: with musical theme (the myth of Pan and Marsyas). After the room housing’ non-European instruments, there is the room with the first pianos: one of the three examples built by Bartolomeo Cristofori (1722) is very remarkable. The nice folding harpsichord (1537) displayed in the following room, as well as the “pochette”, little three string pocket-violins, were used by street musicians during the Modern Age. The rooms on the right contain instruments from the Middle Ages to the 19th c; a special section is dedicated to the achievement of the mechanical instruments. One of the most remarkable examples is the magnificent Barbell& Heap, which was built for the homonymous family at the beginning of the 17″‘ c. The instrument bears the mills coat of arms 18

MUNICIPAL ANTIQUARIUM – Rome private tour

The Municipal Antiquarium rises on the green area on the slopes of the Coelian Hill, where originally was the “public walk” of the Romans designed by Gaspare Salvi (1835). The Antiquarium was inaugurated in 1929, and here were housed the materials coming from the 19th and 20th c. deep excavations (after 1870 and in-between the ’20s and ’30s of the 20th c.). Closed because of the collapse of the building which it occupied, the Antiquarium will probably move to the Casino del Salvi (former Kaffiehaus) and to the former-gym of the Opera Balilla (1930).

CAPITOLINE COLLECTIONS IN THE MONTEMARTINI POWER STATION

Luxury private tour in Rome – local licenced guide with car

Private car tour in RomeThe ancient arc sculptures contained in the former Montemartini thermoelectric power station — built in the first half of the last century — come from the Capitoline Museums collections. They were temporarily placed in the industrial archaeology building, nearby St Paul Gate and Cestia Pyramid, following the restoration works of the Capitoline complex, but now are here permanently. This new salt of the power station as a dAcsical art museum is part of the restoration plans of the industrial area at Ostiense, destined to become in the following years a new cultural place in the South of Rome, with a university and a “City of Science and Technique”.

Montemartini Rome private tour
Montemartini Rome private tour

The unused spaces of the thermoelectric power station contain about 400 sculptures which trace the history of the Roman art from Servius Tullius’ period to the late-ancient era, and some rare and magnificent examples of Greek sculpture. The arrangement of the ancient sculptures within the Art Nouveau spaces of the building creates a very good sensation, and the contrast between so different archaeological materials makes the arrangement very interesting. The contrast between the brightness of the marble and the greyness of the machinery, the combination of beautiful ancient sculptures with the engines of the early 20th c., the wideness of the expositive spaces and the monumentality of the industrial ones, make the Montemartini Power Station the right place for those looking for a trace of contemporary arrangement in the city ancient collections. Musei capitolini Rome car tours The archaeological collections here housed come from the last excavations made in Rome for the massive planning restoration of the city between the end of the 19th c. and the beginning of the 20″ c. The 19’h c. excavations in the suburban areas of the city (Esquiline, Quirinal, Viminal) brought to light complete monumental materials which adorned the suburban imperial Villas during the Augustan age, the horti in the suburban green areas which would become the new quarters of Rome capital of Italy following the achievement of the Italian unity (1860-70) (Horti of Maecenas on the Esquiline Hill, Horti of Sallust on the Quirinal, Horti Lamiani on the Esquiline Hill). In addiction to these materials, there are the sculptures found during the excavations in the ’30s, on and around the Capitoline Hill which would lead to the construction of Via dei Fori Imperiali and to the isolation of the area of the Argentina Theatre and the Theatre of Marcellus from the urban area.Classic arts in Rome car tour

On the ground floor, some panels illustrate the history of the Montemartini Power Station and the industrialization process of the Ostiense area; next to huge work tools are the first examples of Classical sculpture and fine Hellenistic handmade articles: among them a bed with bronze fittings decorated with Dionysian themes (1s c. B.C. — lac A.D.). The itinerary ends with a splendid sea theme mosaic which strikes for the able naturalism. A long series of imperial busts of the republican era characterized by very accurate portrayal of the subjects’ features: note the small head of Caesar. On the first floor, the wide area of the Engines Room is overlooked by two huge diesel engines that divide the space into three naves. Here are arranged the sculptures coming from the archaeological excavations of the ’30s of the 20th c. and the sculptures belonging to the Temple of Apollo Medicus nearby the Theatre of Marcellus restored by Gaius Sosius during the Augustan age (hence the Temple of Apollo Sosianus). The sculptures are 5th c. B.C. Greek originals and belonged to a temple probably erected in Athenian territory. The fine reproduction of the motion of Heracles and Theseus’ battle against the Amazons under the superintendence of Athena is a rare • example in Rome of the formal sensibility acquired by the Classical era Greek artists. On the top floor, the Boilers Room is dominated by the big dark coloured boiler – 15 m high – and the visitor is welcomed by a magnificent “serpentine-moschinato” marble dog and other imposing and realistic animal sculptures.

Montemartini power station Rome
Montemartini power station Rome

The room fitting out is overlooked by the figure of the Musa Polimnia looking ahead while resting the chin cupped in her hand, hidden by a veil: the Antonine age Roman sculptor drew on a 2nd c. B.C. Greek model by Philiskos from Rodi which caught a glimpse of the wrist and the fingers through the subtle cloth, with a rare ability and sensibility. The theme of the veil which covers the body but does not hide it completely was largely diffused in the ancient sculpture, but was scarcely successful; in the Polimnia instead the artist shows a perfect technique and the good state of the statue, which in the past was in an underground shaft, makes it one of the most precious examples.

St. John in Lateran – Arcibasilica di San Giovanni in Laterano

c6 The basilica – or more correctly Holy Saviour, and the saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist – is the cathedral of Roma. It was built in the form of a basilica with five aisles like the original St. Peter’s; on old constructions; the horse-guards’ barracks of the em-peror, through the interest of Constantine, who gave it to the African Pope, Melchiades. When it was inaugurated in 327, it was dedicated only to the Holy Saviour. Damaged and restored several times, the basilica was always subject of important artistic operations. After those of the Middle Ages, among others there were the lost frescoes by Gentile da Fabriano and Pisanello. The works undertaken under Sixtus V were decisive, the nearby Lateran Palace, residence of Pontif-fs up to the period of the Avignon captivity is also interesting.

Arcibasilica di San Giovanni in Laterano – Musica originale di Adel Karanov – Rusrim Video

Apart from the restoration by Borromini, the basilica is noted for the splen-did Facade, built on the design by Alessandro Galilei (finished in 1735). Inside, under the tabernacle is the papal altar (where only the Pontiffs may celebrate mass) where the old wooden altar is preserved. Besides the many works preserved, the cloister of the Vassalletto and the nearby octagonal baptistery also erected by Constantine over a baths building of the 2nd century AD., are of particular importance. The restoration of the basilica was with-out doubt the most important commis-sion given to Borromini.

c1It was Innocent X, Pamphilj, who ordered the restoration of the building that had gone into a state of decay for the Jubilee of 1650. The pope, however, limited the ingenious solutions presented by the archi-tect, since he intended to preserve as much as possible of the previous works. The most dras-tic decision concerned the renunciation of the construction of the vault in the main nave, planned in barrel vaulting of rounded caisson arches, and, instead, stayed with the previous wooden ceiling from halfway through the 1500s. The main nave has pillars with twelve aedicules decorated in the tympanum by the papal dove, in which colossal statues were placed in the 18th century. The architect arranged the sepulchral fragments from earlier periods of the basilica in a completely original manner, in the side aisles. He placed them in aedicules carved into the wall and embellishing them with decorative items invented by him.

ANCIENT ART NATIONAL GALLERY IN BARBERINI PALACE

Luxury private tour in Rome – local guide with car

Palazzo Barberini - Romeprivate tourFounded in 1895, the National Gallery was housed for a long time in Corsini Palace; since the ’50s it has been set in Corsini Palace and Barberini Palace. The latter was built in 1625 for Francesco Barberini, nephew of Pope Urban VIII, by three of the greatest architects of the Roman 17th c.: Carlo Maderno’s design (quadrangular plan of the building and opening towards the surrounding green by means of side wings) was inserted into the pre-existent villa with garden. Gian Lorenzo Bernini succeeded Maderno (central hall, loggia and three architectural orders of the facade, entrance staircase to the first floor) counting on the collaboration of Francesco Borromini (windows of the piano nobile, decorative elements, spiral staircase on the right of the facade). Inside the Palace Andrea Sacchi painted The Divine Wisdom (1629-33) and Pietro da Cortona, between 1633 and 1639, frescoed the central hall with the Triumph of the Divine Providence, an allegorical theme to celebrate the family of the Pope, whose emblem with the three bees is in the middle of the composition: this fresco is the masterpiece of the Baroque illusionistic decoration.

Barberini - Galleria Nazzionale d arte anticaThe 16th c. imposing structures and decoration are in contrast with the apartment dating from the half of the 18th c. on the second floor, reopened at last to the public (although you have to remind the guardians at the end of the visits); small spaces with low ceilings let imagine another kind of privacy and different social conventions. The apartment, decorated between 1750 and 1770, contains undamaged decorations and tapestry of the neo-classical age, like the typical alternation of wall mirrors and stucco pilasters and the oval portraits of the members of the Barberini family. Of remarkable interest are the paintings in the Battles Room by Domenico Corvi and Nicol) Ricciolini. The collection is not made up of a single legacy; but consists of several collections (Barberini, Torlonia, Sciarra, C -lig° with the addition of private donations. The coldness of the arrangement does not help the visitor: fortunately, the 15d1, 16th and 17th c. works here displayed are of a remarkably quality.

Palazzo Barberini Plan

palazzo barberini scala

Before going up to the first floor, we suggest to go where there is the flight connecting the building and the gardens and the “ponce ruinante” designed by Bernini which suggests the opening towards the gardens. The sixteenth century works are arranged to the left of the entrance, organized by regional schools and chronology. Among the numerous portraits note Magdalene (1501) by Piero di Cosimo, Portrait of a Gentleman by Bartolomeo Veneziano, in which the background landscape can be seen thanks to the opening of a curtain, typical of the Venetian school. Erasmus portrayed in his studio by Quentin Metsys (1517), a typical Humanist in his office, Henty VIII (1540) by Holbein, the famous Fornarina (1518-19) by Raphael, whose signature is Ion his mistress’ bracelet, depicted as she lazily covers her nudity with a veil: it is one of the most famous paintings of the artist and she became the feminine nude model over the centuries (from Goya to Ingres).

CAPITOLINE MUSEUMS ROME

Luxury private tour in Rome –  local guide with car

The Capitoline Museums rise on the homonymous Republican Rome hill, once occupied by the most important temple in the city, the Temple of Jupiter Capitoline (6th c. B.C.), the ruins of which lie under the Conservators Palace. During the early Middle Ages, but still today, the Town Council took place there (13th c.). It considered the hill the place of the civic power: here executions took place, flocks pastured (hence the name of Monte Caprino) and Petrarca set here his symbolic coronation as a poet in 1341, marking the beginning of the renovatio urbis which would continue during the next two centuries and would turn the Hill into today’s monumental complex. In 1471 Sixtus IV gave the Roman people some ancient bronzes which originated the Roman archaeological collections that can boast many masterpieces. The bronze statues, which can be seen in the Conservators Palace, were placed in the zone closed by the Senatorial Palace, that was erected on the State Archives of the ancient city, the Tzbularium (1″ c. B.C.). Here is a splendid view of the Forum. As regards the ancient arrangement of the monumental complex towards the Forum, the new hill opened out towards Campo Marzio and the Middle Ages and the Modern quarter surrounding it; this was demolished because of the construction of the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II (1885-1927)

Steps of St Mary in Aracoeli and of the Capitol and for the excavations of Via dei Fori in the first decades on the 20th c. An example of Middle Ages buildings is the left side of the entrance staircase to St Maria in Aracoeli (7th and then 13th c.). In 1538 the restoration of the square and the buildings started by design of Michelangelo: the artist placed the gilt bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius in the middle of Campidoglio Square (now replaced by a copy) and modified the two pre-existent buildings. Moreover, he planned the New Palace, built during the subsequent century, which closes the square towards

the Church of Aracoeli. We owe to his superintendence the facade of the Senatorial Palace, made up of big pilasters — the most spectacular Michelangelesque innovation in ornamental architecture — and a monumental double staircase. Two representations, one of the Tiber (right) and one of the Nile (left) were placed on the two sides of the stairs, and then also the Sitting Minerva statue, considered the Goddess of Rome ,(Domitian age). The artist also designed the entrance staircase to the monumental complex, the balustrade on Campo Marzio and the flooring, completed in 1940 following greatly the original plans. Starting from 1563 the Conservators Palace was restored. It showed on the façade the colossal Head of Constantine and the She-Wolf; symbol of the city that, according to the legend, breast-fed the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. The facade was restored in giant order and an entrance staircase was added on the first floor; the numerous statues were arranged in the inside courtyard and in the frescoed rooms of the Town Council. The huge amount of ancient collections led to the construction of a new museum: the construction works of the New Palace started in 1603 and ended in 1667.

Santa Maria sopra Minerva

The name of the Dominican church erected in the area which was at one time reserved for Egyptian worship, the lseum has always been associated with the nearby temple of Min-erva Chalcidica. The interior houses exceptional works from the end of the 13th century to the 79th century, when the building un-derwent a radical restoration. Besides the superb cycle of frescoes by Filippino Lippi, the funeral monuments of five Pontiffs from Leo X to Benedict XIII are important. The 1600s are well represented by the sculptures in the Aldobran-dini Chapel and a famous work by Bernini. Catherine of Siena, pa-tron saint of Italy and co-patron saint of Europe; and the Domini-can painter, Fra Angelico are buried in the church.

The first version of the Christ carry-ing the cross, carried out on the 15th June, 1514 for Metello Vari, was left unfinished because of a fault in the marble. The present version, outlined in Florence by Michelangelo in 1518, was completed in Roma by students in 1521. Despite the fact that the figure of Christ – whose nudity (later covered by cloth) shows him, an almost pa-gan hero, in the guise of the Redeemer while holding the instruments of the Passion — ap-pears of great influence, even though it is no longer in the aedicule which was originally on the left-hand pillar of the presbytery, de-stroyed in the 18th century.

The interior of Santa Maria della Vittoria, facing the front of the church and the main altar

santa maria della vittoria romeIn the Cornaro chapel, Bernini accomplished one of his most extraordinary artistic feats, creating a monument which has a remarkable theatrical and illusionistic power. The theme of the chapel was the ecstasy of the Spanish saint, Teresa, who was famed for the unusual spiritual experiences through which she attained mystic union with Christ. The artist had no trouble portraying the saint in a state of rapture, but the pose is so sensual that the spiritual nature of the event is lost on many observers. It is as if the saint is suspended on a bed of clouds, whose base, because it is darker and placed further back, is at first glance invisible, giving the impression that the marble cloud really is suspended in the air. However the main theatrical and illusory effect is achieved by the role Bernini so wisely gave to the natural light. Behind the sculpture he created a small semi-circular apse, which projects from the wall of the church. This enabled him to open a window, which is invisible to people looking at the chapel, at the top of the little apse.

organ santa maria della vittoriaTo emphasise the symbolic value of the light, he added a series of gilded rays, which reflect and enhance the light entering through the little window. The effect was intended to appear supernatural. Bernini had turned the chapel into a theatrical stage with many spectators: the patron, the Venetian cardinal, Federico Camaro, and his ancestors. In their half-length portraits, they peer from the side boxes as if invited to share in the miraculous event, and seem to cast intent and admiring glances on the drama unfolding on the stage — the central group of the saint with the angel who is about to transfix her with a dart. In a sense this work is a symbol of the baroque itself: sculpture, light, architecture and painting are fused in a unique tableau of awe and wonder; tangible reality and the illusion of space are indistinguishable and art and imagination are as one.

COLONNA GALLERY and COLONNA PALACE

COA_Prince_of_Paliano_(Colonna_with_princeley_crown).svgThe Colonna Gallery is an enchanting place: the art collection — paintings, sculptures, frescoes — perfectly fit in with the architectural structure of the Colonna family’s Palace which contains the imposing 17th c. Gallery. It is the best example in the city of art works arrangement within spaces purposely planned to house public expositions of family collections, in order to sing the family’s praises and riches. Time here seems to have stopped to the day of the Gallery inauguration in 1703, even if a cannonball on the staircase of the Palace, crashed here because of a target mistake on the day after the proclamation of the Roman Republic (1849), is the evidence of the passing of time. Take the list of the paintings at the entrance: remember that the works’ numbering follows the alphabetical order of the. artists (Albani is the number 1 while Veronese is the number 197) and not that of the works’ arrangement. The gallery and the collection were begun by Cardinal Girolamo Colonna around the middle of the 17th c. in the pre-existent family Palace, which overlooks Sts Apostles Square and continues in the garden ascending to Quirinale Square

The splendid gallery (39×10.5×13 m) is supplemented by two cabinets on the short sides and has three wide windows; the interior continues in the back garden and in the walking leading to the 18th c. Kaffeehaus. Here there is a remarkable collection of 15th, 16th and 17th c. paintings, arranged in several rows along the walls, and there are also ancient sculptures alternated to mirrors and desks on which are Renaissance bronzes, according to the 17th c. decorative taste that tends to fill all the available spaces both horizontally and vertically. The leitmotiv of the complex is the glorification of the family through the victory of Marcantonio II Colonna at Lepanto (1571): the three vaults’ frescoes, the statues and the desks recall the glorious event in which he was the protagonist. Even if there were some changes over the centuries – the most serious was the sale of some masterpieces to help the Papacy in the indemnity of the Treaty of Tolentino (1798) – the collection retains its original arrangement. Is the entrance room, besides examples of the 15th c. Ferrara . painting, the inside windows’ shutters have landscape paintings by Gaspard Dughet, one of the favourite articfli of the Cardinal. On the wall is the fine Christ Crowned with Thorns attributed to Francesco Trevisani. In the Colonna Bellica Hall, with the family’s emblem in the middle, are some Florentine taste paintings which enrich the collection. They came to the family at the beginning of the 18th c. by marriage: among them, Venus with Cupid and a Satyr by Agnolo Bronzino, and three erotic subject paintings — covered with veils during the following century.

Of remarkable interest are the two wedding chests with the Rape of the Sabines and the Peace between the Romans and the Sabines dating from the 15′ c., always of Florentine taste, whose background is overlooked by the monuments of the ancient Rome. The vault frescoed by Giuseppe Chiari depicts Marcantonio II Colonna as “Young Hercules” (Apotheosis of Marcantonio Colonna); the central panel depicts the leader while arranging the attack from his ship’s stem (Battle of Lepanto). Steps lead down to die Great Gallery – the superb decoration of the vault was completed in 1678. The paintings of the five central panels are by Giovanni Coli and Filippo Gherardi; the decoration of the frames is by Jan Paul Schor and others, according to a typical working duties skilfulness. The four big mirrors were painted by Carlo Maratta and Mario dei Fiori: the former painted the children and the latter the flower compositions. The paintings here displayed are from the Roman School of the first half of the 17″ c.; there are two dissimilar paintings of Salvator Rosa, St John the Baptist in a Cave, an early work which can be considered a self-portrait of the artist, and the Preaching of St John the Baptist in the Desert, a late work. The vault frescoes are by Sebastiano Ricci, who prefers the white space of the sky framed by figures from the Battle of Lepanto (Allegory of the Victory of Marcantonio II Colonna at Lepanto). On the walls are the landscape paintings, one of the most noteworthy series of the collection: originally it was made up of 66 paintings; now there are about 30 by different artists, among which – the light style of Gaspard Dughet (12 paintings). On the walls there are also two rare examples of Roman caskets dating from the middle of the 17″‘ c.

The following room, entirely re-decorated over the 18″ c., houses some masterpieces, among them the Bean Eater by Annibale Carracci, the Rape of Europe by Francesco Albani and the Portrait of a Gentleman by Paolo Veronese. The Throne Room was once reserved to the Pope; now it houses two magnificent rock crystal chandeliers. The Room of the “Primitives” ends the visit: two works by Bernard van Orley depicting the Seven Joys and the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin, according to a didactic model particularly successful in Northern Europe. Moreover are fine examples of Northern Italy paintings between the15″ and 17′ c., among them Holy Family by Simone Cantarini. The private apartment adorned during the second half of the 18″ c. can be visited by request.

PALAZZO CORSINI in ROME

palazzo-corsini-romaFormerly Riario Palace (1511-18) and then Palace of Christina of Swe-den (1659-89), Corsini Palace now hosts the Corsini Gallery and Library as well as the Lincean Academy (The National Academy of Science). The picture gallery remains in its historical location with-in the Palace of Via della Lungara which faces the Villa Farnesina. This palace was acquired in 1736 upon the arrival of the Florentine family to Rome soon after the election of Pope Clement XII (1730-40). The main collection is on the first floor of the majestic palace that archi-tect Ferdinando Fuga designed for Car-dinal Neri and his brother, Bartolomeo Corsini. It was based on the French mod-el of the Palace of Versailles with anoth-er wing (1736-1753) which doubled the facade to the right of the entrance and a central double-banistered staircase leading into a connected garden. The lavish interior of the building, the gathering place of erudite scholarijike Neri Corsini himself, the family librar-ian – Giovanni Gaetano Bottari – and the Quirini academicians, both faces and reflects the ancient magnificence of the Italian garden with its Scalinata delle Undici Fontane designed by Fuga (1741-1744). The gardens which included a “Teatro di verzura” (a fashionable 18th centu-ry open theatre with the use of hedges and bushes as theatre-props and a raised lawn replacing a stage), encompassed woods, labyrinths, paths, fountains, quaint waterfalls and antique sculp-tures. These have now become the bo-tanical gardens belonging to the Facolta di Biologia dell’Universita di Roma “La Sapienza”. The gardens together with the Palace were granted to the State in 1883 by Prince Tommaso Corsini.

THE COLLECTION

Corsini Gallery - individual excursions in RomeThe Corsini picture gallery, which has remained unchanged since the 18th centu-ry, represents the most important example of Fideicommissum. The institution prohib-ited heirs from alienating works of art be-longing to the family and thus the entire collection was preserved intact. The collec-tion is also rare evidence of the phenom-enon of “collezionismo” between the 17th and 18th centuries, but the uniqueness of its history stems from its residence within the Renaissance Palazzo Riario, where lat-er Christina of Sweden chose a splendid-ly ornate chamber as her private “alcove”. The Corsini collection was donated to the State in 1883 and formed the main collection of the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica which was founded for the occa-sion. Displayed on the main floor, the pic-ture gallery is composed of over 300 paint-ings, numerous sculptures and precious ornaments set within the elegant decora-tion lining walls and doors.

Corsini gallery - Rome private guideThe original collection is mainly com-prised of works bought by the senior Car-dinal Neri Corsini in the 17th century, of the major property of Cardinal Lorenzo, later Pope Clemente XII (1730-1740), and his grandchildren, Bartolomeo and Neri junior (1685-1770). It is particularly characterized by the cultural tastes of the latter who emerged from a Florentine background and was in-fluenced by the cosmopolitan climate of the European courts. Cardinal Neri Jr. con-tributed to the cultural movement of the times by widening artistic circles through close relations with art-merchants and art-ists like R Anesi, A. Masucci, G. P. Pan-nini and G. Van Witte! — testified by the existence of their works in the gallery. This was magnified by the friendship he culti-vated with classicist art-critic Giovanni Gaetano Bottari.

Corsini Gallery - Rome individual car excursionsThe new exhibition aspires to display the historical Corsini picture gallery at the height of its splendor. It was document-ed in the inventory of 1771 which gave a comprehensive description of the works in five rooms (Antechamber, First Gal-lery, Cardinal Gallery, Fireplace Chamber and Alcova Room), and in the inventory of 1784 that described the other rooms of the apartment at the time of Cardinal Andrea Corsini. The former Chamber of Hercu-les and Lica, having taken its name from Canova’s sculpture exhibited there in 1907, is now reserved for museum events and is not part of the current exhibit.
