san luigi dei francesi Caravagio private tourThanks to the mediation of Cardinal Del Monte from the July of 1599 to that of 1600, Caravaggio painted the two side canvases for the chapel of Cardinal Contarelli in San Luigi dei Francesi, his first public commission. The Calling and Martyrdom of Saint Matthew were both demanding in terms of the depiction of a story in action and the numerous figures. The symbolic role of the light, coupled with the natural illumination of the chapel, lends unity to the whole. With these canvases Caravaggio brings contemporary reality into a sacred scene and into a church chapel for the first time. Characters dressed in the current style participate in the sacred event as they go about their daily life, intent on tavern games. The first canvas to be finished was the Calling. Caravaggio constructs the scene around the gesture of Christ, who points towards Matthew and whose hand position is mirrored by the latter’s. The two groups are unified by the shaft of light, whose origin is outside the field of vision, above the head of Jesus. The light is both divine and natural and also serves as an efficacious stylistic expedient to emphasise the evident contrast between the modern clothes of Matthew and his companions and the few divine attributes of the apostle, who is barefoot and wrapped in a large cloak of antique style. In the case of the Martyrdom, the focal point of the scene is the executioner, who is in the act of striking the martyr. The other characters are placed around the central figure, gradually going further back into the bare space which is the scene of the action. Caravaggio freezes the dramatic moment before the death by means of the light. This is concentrated on the naked body of the executioner poised to strike and on the angel who proffers the palm of martyrdom to the saint. Today the itinerary through the gallery includes eight rooms on the ground floor as well as the great entrance hall and the chapel, with statues in the center of the rooms, surrounded by the paintings on the walls and the decorations of the ceilings, which conStituted the thematic thread of the 18th century layout as well. In the entrance hall late Roman Statues line the walls, while the Roman statue of Marco Curzio, restored by Pietro Bernini, occupies the back wall. Canova’s Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Vic’trix may be admired in the hall known as del Vaso (of the vase).

The room of the Sun (dd Sole) houses painting and sculpture such as Bernini’s David, a painting by BattiStello, and two controversial Still-lifes, attributed to Caravaggio by Zeri. Six of the twelve paintings by Caravaggio owned  by Scipione hand in the room of Silenus (del Silena). The upper storey of the gallery, with thirteen additional rooms, focuses principally on paintings, exhibited in chronological order and by schools. The Museo Carlo Bi/otti, opened q ite recently. is housed in the ex-Orangerie of the villa. known as Casino dei Giocbi d’Acqua (Fountains) during the 18th century. The title is the result of a late 18th century interpretation based on a moralistic reading of the clothed figure. With conflicring feelings of disgust and pity, with one hand David brandishes his sword, on whose blade are letters which are not easy to decipher, but which may form the morto «Humilitas Occidit Superbiam»; the biblical hero is in fact a model of virtue. If one accepts the hypothesis that Scipione Borghese had commissioned Caravaggio for the work, it probably belongs to the last Roman period and would therefore be from before 1606. However, some scholars attribute the simplification of forms, the essential quality of the composition and the rapid application of brushstrokes to a later period. In this case the painting may be interpreted as a gift, sent by the attiSt to Cardinal Scipione Borghese in the expecration of being granted grace, as the lasr attempt at drawing attention to the desperation of his circumstances and his wish to return to Rome.

In 1605, Cardinal Scipione Borghese, nephew of Pope Paul V and patron of Bernini, began turning this former vineyard into the most extensive gardens built in Rome since Antiquity. The vineyard’s site is identified with the gardens of Lucullus, the most famous in the late Roman republic. In the 19th century much of the garden’s former formality was remade as a landscape garden in the English taste (illustration, right). The Villa Borghese gardens were long informally open, but were bought by the commune of Rome and given to the public in 1903. The large landscape park in the English taste contains several villas. The Spanish Steps lead up to this park, and there is another entrance at the Porte del Popolo by Piazza del Popolo. The Pincio (the Pincian Hill of ancient Rome), in the south part of the park, offers one of the greatest views over Rome.

A balustrade (dating from the early seventeenth century) from the gardens, was taken to England in the late 19th century, and installed in the grounds of Cliveden House, a mansion in Buckinghamshire, in 1896. The Piazza di Siena, located in the villa, hosted the equestrian dressage, individual jumping, and the jumping part of the eventing competition for the 1960 Summer Olympics. In 2004, a species of Italian snail was discovered, still living on the balustrade after more than 100 years in England.

Today the Galleria Borghese is housed in the Villa Borghese itself. The garden Casino Borghese, built on a rise above the Villa by the architect Giovanni Vasanzio, was set up by Camillo Borghese to contain sculptures by Bernini from the Borghese collection, including his David and his Daphne, and paintings by Titian, Raphael and Caravaggio.
The Villa Giulia adjoining the Villa Borghese gardens was built in 1551 – 1555 as a summer residence for Pope Julius III; now it contains the Etruscan Museum (Museo Etrusco).

The Villa Medici houses the French Academy in Rome, and the Fortezzuola a Gothic garden structure that houses a collection memorializing the academic modern sculptor Pietro Canonica. In the 1650s, Diego Velázquez painted several depictions of this Villa’s garden casino festively illuminated at night. Before electricity, such torchlit illuminations carried an excitement hard to conceive today.
Other villas scattered through the Villa Borghese gardens are remains of a world exposition in Rome in 1911.
The Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna located in its grounds has a collection of 19th- and 20th-century paintings emphasizing Italian artists.
Architecturally the most notable of the 1911 exposition pavilions is the English pavilion designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens (who later designed New Delhi), now housing the British School at Rome.

By the year 1300 Florence had become a center of textile production in Europe. This work by Bartolomeo Ammannati (1563–1565) and some assistants, such as Giambologna, was commissioned on the occasion of the wedding of Francesco I de’ Medici with Johanna of Austria in 1565. The assignment had first been given to Baccio Bandinelli, who designed the model but he died before he could start working on the block of Apuan marble.

The Neptune figure, whose face resembles that of Cosimo I de’ Medici, was meant to be an allusion to the dominion of the Florentines over the sea. The figure stands on a high pedestal in the middle of an octagonal fountain. The pedestal is decorated with the mythical figures of Scylla and Charybdis. It has been described as one of the finest Romanesque structures in Tuscany and one of the most scenic churches in Italy. There is an adjoining Olivetan monastery, seen to the right of the basilica when ascending the stairs. St. Miniato was an Armenian prince serving in the Roman army under Emperor Decius. He was denounced as a Christian after becoming a hermit and was brought before the Emperor who was camped outside the gates of Florence. The Emperor ordered him to be thrown to beasts in the Amphitheatre where a panther was called upon him but refused to devour him. Beheaded in the presence of the Emperor, he is alleged to have picked up his head, crossed the Arno and walked up the hill of Mons Fiorentinus to his hermitage. A shrine was later erected at this spot and there was a chapel there by the 8th century. Arguably the finest Romanesque structure in Tuscany, San Minato is also the oldest surviving church building in Florence after the baptistery. The name Loggia dei Lanzi dates back to the reign of Grand Duke Cosimo I, when it was used to house his formidable landsknechts (In Italian: “Lanzichenecchi”, corrupted to Lanzi), or German mercenary pikemen.[1] After the construction of the Uffizi at the rear of the Loggia, the Loggia’s roof was modified by Bernardo Buontalenti and became a terrace from which the Medici princes could watch ceremonies in the piazza. During the Renaissance there were four kinds of musical patronage in the city with respect to both sacred and secular music: state, corporate, church, and private and it was here that the Florentine Camerata convened in the mid-16th century and experimented with setting tales of Greek mythology to music and staging the result—in other words, the first operas, setting the wheels in motion not just for the further development of the operatic form, but for later developments of separate “classical” forms such as the symphony.

The contrast with Florence are extended in Siena’s monumental and artistic high-lights. The city’s duomo and alazzo Pubblico are two of the purest buildings of Italian Gothic, and the finest of the city’s paintings – of with many are collected in the Palazzo’s Museo Civico and the separate Pinacoteca Nazionale – are in the same tradition. In its sculpture, Siena drew mainly on foreign artistsç the Florentines Donatello and Ghiberti worked on the front of the baptistery, while Michelangelo and Nicola and iovanni Pisano left their mark on the duomo.

  • Duomo di Siena – The Siena Cathedral

Siena duomoSiena Cathedral is a medieval church in Siena, Italy, dedicated from its earliest days as a Roman Catholic Marian church, and now dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta (Holy Mary, Our Lady of the Assumption).

The cathedral itself was originally designed and completed between 1215 and 1263 on the site of an earlier structure. It has the form of a Latin cross with a slightly projecting transept, a dome and a bell tower. The dome rises from a hexagonal base with supporting columns. The lantern atop the dome was added by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The nave is separated from the two aisles by semicircular arches. The exterior and interior are constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with addition of red marble on the façade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, etiologically linked to black and white horses of the legendary city’s founders, Senius and Aschius.

siena duomo foto d arteThe exterior Despite all the grand abandoned plans, the duomo, as it stands, is a delight. Its style is an amazing conglomeration of Romanesque and Gothic, delineated by bands of black and white marble, an idea adapted from Pisa and Lucca — though here with much bold-er and more extravagant effect. The lower part of the facade was in fact designed by the Pisan sculptor Giovanni Pisan°, who from 1284 to 1296 created, with his workshop, much of its statuary — the philosophers, patriarchs and prophets, now removed to the cathedral museum and replaced by copies. In the next century the Campanile was added, its windows multiplying at each level, as was the Gothic rose window above the doors. Thereafter work came to a complete halt, with the mosaics designed for the gables having to wait until the nineteenth century, when money was found to employ Venetian artists. Immediately above the central door, note St Bernardino’s bronze monogram of Christ’s name.

  •  The Baptistery – Siena – Tuscany 

Baptistery of Siena toursThe cathedral chapter responsible for the baptistery font (1417-30) must have had a good sense of what was happening in Florence at the time, for they managed to cont• mission panels by Ghiberti (Baptism of Christ and John in Prison) and Donatello (Herod’s Feast), as well as by the local sculptor Jacopo della Quercia (The Angel Announcing the Baptist’s Birth). Jacopo also executed the marble tabernacle above, and the summit statue of John the Baptist and the five niche statues of the Prophets. Of the main panels, Donatello’s scene, in particular, is a superb piece of drama, with Herod and his cronies recoiling at the appearance of the Baptist’s head. Donatello was also responsible for two of the corner angels (Faith and Hope) and (with Giovanni di Turino) for the miniature angels on the tabernacle above. The lavishly frescoed walls almost overshadow the font, their nineteenth-century overpainting having been removed after a vigorous assault by the restorers. With your back to the entrance the best include (on the left arched vault lunette) a fresco of scenes from the life of St Anthony (1460) by Benvenuto di Giovanni, a pupil of Vecchietta; scenes from the life of Christ by Vecchietta himself (inside left wall of the central stepped chapel); and the same artist’s Prophets, Sibyls and Articles of the Creed (the main vaults), the last a repeat of a theme he would use in the Ospedale di Santa Maria della Scala.

She spent three years in silent contempla-tion, before experiencing a mystical “Night Obscure”.
