CAPITOLINE COLLECTIONS IN THE MONTEMARTINI POWER STATION

Luxury private tour in Rome – local licenced guide with car

Private car tour in RomeThe ancient arc sculptures contained in the former Montemartini thermoelectric power station — built in the first half of the last century — come from the Capitoline Museums collections. They were temporarily placed in the industrial archaeology building, nearby St Paul Gate and Cestia Pyramid, following the restoration works of the Capitoline complex, but now are here permanently. This new salt of the power station as a dAcsical art museum is part of the restoration plans of the industrial area at Ostiense, destined to become in the following years a new cultural place in the South of Rome, with a university and a “City of Science and Technique”.

The unused spaces of the thermoelectric power station contain about 400 sculptures which trace the history of the Roman art from Servius Tullius’ period to the late-ancient era, and some rare and magnificent examples of Greek sculpture. The arrangement of the ancient sculptures within the Art Nouveau spaces of the building creates a very good sensation, and the contrast between so different archaeological materials makes the arrangement very interesting. The contrast between the brightness of the marble and the greyness of the machinery, the combination of beautiful ancient sculptures with the engines of the early 20th c., the wideness of the expositive spaces and the monumentality of the industrial ones, make the Montemartini Power Station the right place for those looking for a trace of contemporary arrangement in the city ancient collections. Musei capitolini Rome car tours The archaeological collections here housed come from the last excavations made in Rome for the massive planning restoration of the city between the end of the 19th c. and the beginning of the 20″ c. The 19’h c. excavations in the suburban areas of the city (Esquiline, Quirinal, Viminal) brought to light complete monumental materials which adorned the suburban imperial Villas during the Augustan age, the horti in the suburban green areas which would become the new quarters of Rome capital of Italy following the achievement of the Italian unity (1860-70) (Horti of Maecenas on the Esquiline Hill, Horti of Sallust on the Quirinal, Horti Lamiani on the Esquiline Hill). In addiction to these materials, there are the sculptures found during the excavations in the ’30s, on and around the Capitoline Hill which would lead to the construction of Via dei Fori Imperiali and to the isolation of the area of the Argentina Theatre and the Theatre of Marcellus from the urban area.Classic arts in Rome car tour

On the ground floor, some panels illustrate the history of the Montemartini Power Station and the industrialization process of the Ostiense area; next to huge work tools are the first examples of Classical sculpture and fine Hellenistic handmade articles: among them a bed with bronze fittings decorated with Dionysian themes (1s c. B.C. — lac A.D.). The itinerary ends with a splendid sea theme mosaic which strikes for the able naturalism. A long series of imperial busts of the republican era characterized by very accurate portrayal of the subjects’ features: note the small head of Caesar. On the first floor, the wide area of the Engines Room is overlooked by two huge diesel engines that divide the space into three naves. Here are arranged the sculptures coming from the archaeological excavations of the ’30s of the 20th c. and the sculptures belonging to the Temple of Apollo Medicus nearby the Theatre of Marcellus restored by Gaius Sosius during the Augustan age (hence the Temple of Apollo Sosianus). The sculptures are 5th c. B.C. Greek originals and belonged to a temple probably erected in Athenian territory. The fine reproduction of the motion of Heracles and Theseus’ battle against the Amazons under the superintendence of Athena is a rare • example in Rome of the formal sensibility acquired by the Classical era Greek artists. On the top floor, the Boilers Room is dominated by the big dark coloured boiler – 15 m high – and the visitor is welcomed by a magnificent “serpentine-moschinato” marble dog and other imposing and realistic animal sculptures.

The room fitting out is overlooked by the figure of the Musa Polimnia looking ahead while resting the chin cupped in her hand, hidden by a veil: the Antonine age Roman sculptor drew on a 2nd c. B.C. Greek model by Philiskos from Rodi which caught a glimpse of the wrist and the fingers through the subtle cloth, with a rare ability and sensibility. The theme of the veil which covers the body but does not hide it completely was largely diffused in the ancient sculpture, but was scarcely successful; in the Polimnia instead the artist shows a perfect technique and the good state of the statue, which in the past was in an underground shaft, makes it one of the most precious examples.

CAPITOLINE MUSEUMS ROME

Luxury private tour in Rome –  local guide with car

The Capitoline Museums rise on the homonymous Republican Rome hill, once occupied by the most important temple in the city, the Temple of Jupiter Capitoline (6th c. B.C.), the ruins of which lie under the Conservators Palace. During the early Middle Ages, but still today, the Town Council took place there (13th c.). It considered the hill the place of the civic power: here executions took place, flocks pastured (hence the name of Monte Caprino) and Petrarca set here his symbolic coronation as a poet in 1341, marking the beginning of the renovatio urbis which would continue during the next two centuries and would turn the Hill into today’s monumental complex. In 1471 Sixtus IV gave the Roman people some ancient bronzes which originated the Roman archaeological collections that can boast many masterpieces. The bronze statues, which can be seen in the Conservators Palace, were placed in the zone closed by the Senatorial Palace, that was erected on the State Archives of the ancient city, the Tzbularium (1″ c. B.C.). Here is a splendid view of the Forum. As regards the ancient arrangement of the monumental complex towards the Forum, the new hill opened out towards Campo Marzio and the Middle Ages and the Modern quarter surrounding it; this was demolished because of the construction of the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II (1885-1927)

Steps of St Mary in Aracoeli and of the Capitol and for the excavations of Via dei Fori in the first decades on the 20th c. An example of Middle Ages buildings is the left side of the entrance staircase to St Maria in Aracoeli (7th and then 13th c.). In 1538 the restoration of the square and the buildings started by design of Michelangelo: the artist placed the gilt bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius in the middle of Campidoglio Square (now replaced by a copy) and modified the two pre-existent buildings. Moreover, he planned the New Palace, built during the subsequent century, which closes the square towards

the Church of Aracoeli. We owe to his superintendence the facade of the Senatorial Palace, made up of big pilasters — the most spectacular Michelangelesque innovation in ornamental architecture — and a monumental double staircase. Two representations, one of the Tiber (right) and one of the Nile (left) were placed on the two sides of the stairs, and then also the Sitting Minerva statue, considered the Goddess of Rome ,(Domitian age). The artist also designed the entrance staircase to the monumental complex, the balustrade on Campo Marzio and the flooring, completed in 1940 following greatly the original plans. Starting from 1563 the Conservators Palace was restored. It showed on the façade the colossal Head of Constantine and the She-Wolf; symbol of the city that, according to the legend, breast-fed the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. The facade was restored in giant order and an entrance staircase was added on the first floor; the numerous statues were arranged in the inside courtyard and in the frescoed rooms of the Town Council. The huge amount of ancient collections led to the construction of a new museum: the construction works of the New Palace started in 1603 and ended in 1667.

The Appian Way (Latin and Italian: Via Appia) was one of the earliest and strategically most important Roman roads of the ancient republic. It connected Rome to Brindisi, in southeast Italy. Its importance is indicated by its common name, recorded by Statius:

Appia longarum… regina viarum
“the Appian Way the queen of the long roads”
The road is named after Appius Claudius Caecus, the Roman censor who began and completed the first section as a military road to the south in 312 BC during the Samnite Wars.

appia antica

The origins of  Via Latina are remote and already formed by Nature. The road was used by the Etruscans to colonise Campania and was definitely traced back to the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. It repre-sented an alternative to the Via Appia, since, like the “Regina Viarum”, Via Latina reached Ca-pua, touching the valleys of the Liri and of the Sacco. The pre-sent route follows the Roman one. Along the way there were to be found funeral monuments, patrician villas and catacombs almost completely lost because of the heavy ur-ban expansion undertaken during the 14th cen-tury, in the tract that joined Rome to Anagni. The city gate at the start of the road retains the original architectonic features.

The small chapel near the Latina Gate dates back to the 5th century AD. And was built on the site where tradition has it that St. John the Evangelist was immersed in a container of boiling oil, a terrible trial that miraculously did not kill the saint. The building was renovated by Baldassare Peruzzi or Antonio da San-gallo at the beginning of the 1500s. Borromini’s work, commis-sioned by Cardinal Francesco Paulucci was carried out in 1658 and was limited to the tambour to which the artist added a high frieze.

TM 047There is a Gothic-style motif with palms and rose windows in pairs on the conical cap. In 1716, the interior was decorated by Lazzaro Baldi, a student of Pietro da Cortona.

ARA PACIS MUSEUM

ARA PACIS MUSEUM Lungorevere in Augusta Open every day except Monday 9 am-7 pm The Museum was inaugurated in 2006 after the enclosure was completed to protect the altar that had been consecrated by Augustus in the year 13 BC to honor the long sought-after Roman peace, finally achieved. Discovered at the beginning of the twentieth century under a small palace on Via in Lucina, along Via Lata, the altar of Augustus was a setting for Fascist celebrations during the 1930’s, and had been enclosed in a simple and elegantly functional glass enclosure designed by /vlorpurgo in 1938.

ARA PACIS VIDEO –  Original electronic music by Adel Karanov

After demolition of the old enclosure, architects Richard Meier & Partners rapidly built a much more important and ambitious structure, which spurred urban renewal of the whole area from Piazza Augusto Imperatore to the Cavour bridge. The wisdom of replacing the Rationalist showcase with a new construction in the heart of the city prompted a heated debate between those who called the new structure a “Texan gasoline pump in the heart of one of the most important and historical cities in the world” (Sgarbi) and those who enthusiastically welcomed the first important urban project in the city since the Fascist era. By returning to Giuseppe Valadier’s Trident project (three rays originating in Piazzale Flaminio), Meier lengthened the swath of Via di Ripetta to the Cavour bridge and created a continuous background to close the square in front. The river bank should become an area for pedestrians only as should the square, where the neglected Mausoleum of Augustus is surrounded by buildings of the Fascist era. Ignore the ugly casts of the imperial family to the left in the ample entrance hall and the family tree to the right, to focus on the model of the Altar which illustrates its position in imperial Rome. The lack of explanatory panels combined with the emphasis on the family genealogy of the Augustan dynasty is disconcerting. However, it is not an omission, but the result of a precise strategy.

arapaciscolors

At the entrance level visitors are free to explore the monument on their own: it consists of a sacrificial table surrounded by a enclosure decorated with sculpture in relief On the lower storey, the history and artistic qualities of the altar are the subject of an excellent presentation which ranges from its foundation to today. A computer program makes it possible to play with a virtual color image of the altar in movement. The altar is famous for its sculpted enclosure with the succession of portraits of the Augustan dynasty and, on the upper level to the right and the left, the images of imperial ceremonies which reflect the hierarchy of that society. Most of these portraits, including Augustus himself, have been identified, as may be seen on the model downstairs. However, the greatest artistic value is to be found in the luxuriant frieze of vegetal motifs on the lower level, a symbol of peace accompanied by prosperity.

ara pacisThe frieze, which does include much restored work in plaster, was very finely sculpted in the style of Alexandria and represents a very rich vein of compositional creativity, from the heart of the acanthus motif to the myriad of common plants inhabited by small animals and birds, of which the lower level seems to present an entire catalogue. On the short sides there are four large scenes in honor of Rome: toward the entry (west side) the nursing of Romulus and Remus and Aeneas offering a sacrifice to the Penates; on the back (east side) the goddess of Rome and Tellus or Venus, the ideal founder of the Augustan dynasty

  2. Fontana di Trevi – The Trevi fountain  a happy and successful marriage of classicism and baroque, was planned as an exhibition of the Acqua Vergine by Nicola Salvi under the patronage of Trevi fountain Rome private tour
Clement XII. Pope Urban VIII Barberini had already instructed Gian Lorenzo Bernini to «transform» the piazza and the fountain. but the project was never carried out. Set along one side of Palazzo Poli, the Fountain, which was made by Nicola Salvi between 1732 and 1763, represents an original and imaginative fusion, in the Berninian Style, of architecture, sculpture and the natural elements which contribute to the Fountain’s unique character. The theme of the sculpture is the sea. The design is dominated by a charior in the form of a shell in which the great statue of Neptune by Pietro Bracci stands, flanked in the side niches by Health and Plenty, the works of Filippo Della Valle. The charior is pulled by marine horses. who are in turn preceded by tritons. The marine divinities are placed on rocks of irregular blocks of travertine. The fountain sprawls below the facade of the palazzo behind it, which is in rigidly classicising Style, based on the triumphal arch model, with further sculptures in niches as well as in the attic storey and an elegant balustrade. The surrounding houses crowd round the splendid monument, giving the impression of an amphitheatre, while the noise of the fountain’s water can be heard From the maze of surrounding streets up to the moment when the snow-white scene appears miraculously before the astonished eyes of the visitor.

Anfiteatro Flavio – Colosseo – Rome private tour

From the moment it was built, the grandeur of the Flavian Amphitheatre has conditioned Rome’s urban landscape and it still dominates the ancient centre. Its arcaded surface was
chosen as the theatrical background to the Via dei Fori lmperiali. It was the first amphitheatre to be built in Rome in the form of a monument. In the Republican age the gladiatorial games took place in the Roman Forum, where temporary wooden structures were provided for the occasion. Vespasian, the founder of the Flavian dynasty, emerged victorious from the civil war which followed Nero’s death in 69 AD. As part of a coherent political scheme, the new Emperor decided to dedicate the huge urban spaces and works of art appropriated by Nero to the public, for their enjoyment. The organisation of the internal seating was Strictly governed by the laws established by Augustus, through which spectators were seated according to their social class.

  11. Colonna Traiana – Trajan’s Column – Roman triumphal column that commemorates Roman emperor Trajan’s victory in the Dacian Wars. It was probably constructed under the supervision of the architect Apollodorus of Damascus at the order of the Roman Senate.
  12. Mercati di Traiano – Mercatus Traiani – Trajan’s Market was probably built in 100-110 AD by Apollodorus of Damascus. The huge architecrural complex of the forum and Trajan’s Markets was until late antiquity considered the most famous of Rome’s wonders. The impressive projecr was attributed to Apollodorus of Damascus, a Syrian architecr. who worked mainly under the Emperor Trajan, in the F: rst half of the second century AD. This architect, one of the few artisrs of whom records survive, Fused and reworked the Fundamental principles of Hellenistic and Roman architecture. The Markets, which were designed at the same time as Trajan’s forum, are set on the slopes of the Quirinale. with a series of superimposed terraces. The removal of part of the hill, to a height equivalent to that of Trajan’s column, had made space for the creation of a piazza (square) in the grand style. The complex, which was designed for commercial and storage use, is articulated on dilTerent levels, and its facade consisrs of a large exea’ra (curving wall), which includes the Forum’s eastern side, with eleven tabernae (booths) facing it.
  13. Campidoglio hill – Piazza del Campidoglio – Collis Capitōlīnus – It was the citadel (equivalent of the ancient Greek acropolis) of the earliest Romans. 5. Tempio di Ercole Vincitore – The Temple of Hercules Victor – Hercules the Winner or Hercules Olivarius – Dating from the later 2nd century BC By 1132 the temple had been converted to a church, known as Santo Stefano alle Carozze (St. Stephen ‘of the carriages).
  6. Fontana dei Tritoni – This fountain should be distinguished from the similarly named nearby Triton Fountain (Fontana del Tritone) by Bernini. The fountain was completed in 1715 by architect Carlo Francesco Bizzaccheri, during the works for the accommodation of the square in front of the basilica.

  7. Michelangelo Moses The coveted commission of his own splendid mausoleum by Julius II turned into an urter tragedy for Michelangelo, thanks to the continuous interruptions and endless modifications to which the original design was subjecr. Michelangelo threw himself into the projecr with great enthusiasm, following the firsr plan. This envisaged a mausoleum of three sroreys decorated with forty statues in marble, and bronze reliefs; the Moses was to form a pendant to the Statue of Saint Paul, borh being symbols of the mysrery of God’s revelation. Having spent a considerable time on producing numerous drawings and Studies, as well as choosing the marbles in Carrara, the sculptor was forced to abandon the project and concentrate firstly on the work in Saint Peter’s, to which Julius II apparently gave precedence, and, after that, on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. When the Pope died in 1513, Michelangelo returned to the projecr, although it had been very much reduced and modified: the mausoleum was no longer free-Standing but attached to the walls and it had Fewer statues. The artisr undertook to finish this second projecr within seven years, but, in face thirty years would pass before the end producr of the tomb in San Pietro in Vmcoli was achieved, work on this having only been resumed in 1532 after a long interruption. Between 1513 and 1515 Michelangelo worked on the statues of the first two Prisoners (today in the Louvre), which should have acted as telamons to hold up the architrave beside the two figures ofViCtories, and that of Moses. The latter undoubtedly represents one of the summits of Michelangelo‘s art in terms of expressiveness.

  9. Tempietto del Bramante – Tempietto di San Pietro in Montorio  Built on the top of the Gianicolo, the tempietto (little temple) was commissioned by the King of Spain to consecrate the place in which, according to medieval tradition, Saint Peter, the martyr, founder of the Christian Church and flat pope, had been crucified. The young architeCt Bramante conceived it as a genuine martyrium in antique style. with a central plan and a circle of perimeter columns.
    The Bramante temple in Rome
    The Bramante temple – Rome

The building must have been placed in a large square, which, however. was never built. In spite of the reduced size, the space has been planned in grandiose, monumental Style. It is evidently based on the study of the rules of harmony of the Roman Vitruvius, who advised the use of the Doric order of columns for buildings dedicated to masculine divinitics or mythological figures famous for their sum and courage. The architeCt Bramante did in Fact use the Doric order for the tempietto. giving it an air of rigour and economy, which is also due to limited use of excessive decoration and the sober harmony of the volumes.

  10. Fontana Paolina o Fontana dell’Acqua Paola – Il fontanone The big fountain – It was built in 1612 to mark the end of the Acqua Paola aqueduct, restored by Pope Paul V, and took its name from him. It was the first major fountain on the left bank of the River Tiber.
  11. Vaticano – The Vatican and Santa Cecilia
  • San Peter square and basilica San Pietro The open space which lies before the basilica was redesigned by Gian Lorenzo Bernini from 1656 to 1667, under the direction of Pope Alexander VII.
The colossal Tuscan colonnades, four columns deep, frame the trapezoidal entrance to the basilica and the massive elliptical area which precedes it.
At the center of the ovato tondo stands an Egyptian obelisk of red granite, 25.5 metres tall, supported on bronze lions and surmounted by the Chigi arms in bronze, in all 41 metres to the cross on its top. The obelisk was originally erected at Heliopolis, Egypt, by an unknown pharaoh. During the Middle Ages, the gilt ball on top of the obelisk was believed to contain the ashes of Julius Caesar.

Castel Sant Angelo – Private tour of the ancient Rome

Saint-angels-castle-Rome-private toursThe Tiber is dominated by the impressive Mole of Hadrian, built at the behest of the Emperor, probably designed by him and conceived as his personal mausoleum and tomb. Begun in about 123 AD and finished a year after the death of the Emperor by Antoninus Pius, it became the burial place of the Roman emperors up to Caracalla. To reach the mausoleum Hadrian had a bridge specially built opposite the entrance to the majestic building. The mausoleum was in the form of a square at whose corners there were statuary groups. Today the corners of the massive structure are reinforced by bastions erected in the course of the 16th century on the Pope’s wishes, and there are monuments which increase the security and isolation of the mausoleum, which had the appearance of a small fortified village. The tour of the museum inside includes superb cycles of frescoes from the School of Raphael, such as the frieze by Perin del Vaga recounting the tale of Cupid and Psyche, from 1545-1547, and the frescoes of the apartment of Pope Paul III which are attributed to the young Pellegrino Tibaldi.
