PALAZZO CORSINI in ROME

palazzo-corsini-romaFormerly Riario Palace (1511-18) and then Palace of Christina of Swe-den (1659-89), Corsini Palace now hosts the Corsini Gallery and Library as well as the Lincean Academy (The National Academy of Science). The picture gallery remains in its historical location with-in the Palace of Via della Lungara which faces the Villa Farnesina. This palace was acquired in 1736 upon the arrival of the Florentine family to Rome soon after the election of Pope Clement XII (1730-40). The main collection is on the first floor of the majestic palace that archi-tect Ferdinando Fuga designed for Car-dinal Neri and his brother, Bartolomeo Corsini. It was based on the French mod-el of the Palace of Versailles with anoth-er wing (1736-1753) which doubled the facade to the right of the entrance and a central double-banistered staircase leading into a connected garden. The lavish interior of the building, the gathering place of erudite scholarijike Neri Corsini himself, the family librar-ian – Giovanni Gaetano Bottari – and the Quirini academicians, both faces and reflects the ancient magnificence of the Italian garden with its Scalinata delle Undici Fontane designed by Fuga (1741-1744). The gardens which included a “Teatro di verzura” (a fashionable 18th centu-ry open theatre with the use of hedges and bushes as theatre-props and a raised lawn replacing a stage), encompassed woods, labyrinths, paths, fountains, quaint waterfalls and antique sculp-tures. These have now become the bo-tanical gardens belonging to the Facolta di Biologia dell’Universita di Roma “La Sapienza”. The gardens together with the Palace were granted to the State in 1883 by Prince Tommaso Corsini.

THE COLLECTION

Corsini Gallery - individual excursions in RomeThe Corsini picture gallery, which has remained unchanged since the 18th centu-ry, represents the most important example of Fideicommissum. The institution prohib-ited heirs from alienating works of art be-longing to the family and thus the entire collection was preserved intact. The collec-tion is also rare evidence of the phenom-enon of “collezionismo” between the 17th and 18th centuries, but the uniqueness of its history stems from its residence within the Renaissance Palazzo Riario, where lat-er Christina of Sweden chose a splendid-ly ornate chamber as her private “alcove”. The Corsini collection was donated to the State in 1883 and formed the main collection of the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica which was founded for the occa-sion. Displayed on the main floor, the pic-ture gallery is composed of over 300 paint-ings, numerous sculptures and precious ornaments set within the elegant decora-tion lining walls and doors.

Corsini gallery - Rome private guideThe original collection is mainly com-prised of works bought by the senior Car-dinal Neri Corsini in the 17th century, of the major property of Cardinal Lorenzo, later Pope Clemente XII (1730-1740), and his grandchildren, Bartolomeo and Neri junior (1685-1770). It is particularly characterized by the cultural tastes of the latter who emerged from a Florentine background and was in-fluenced by the cosmopolitan climate of the European courts. Cardinal Neri Jr. con-tributed to the cultural movement of the times by widening artistic circles through close relations with art-merchants and art-ists like R Anesi, A. Masucci, G. P. Pan-nini and G. Van Witte! — testified by the existence of their works in the gallery. This was magnified by the friendship he culti-vated with classicist art-critic Giovanni Gaetano Bottari.

Corsini Gallery - Rome individual car excursionsThe new exhibition aspires to display the historical Corsini picture gallery at the height of its splendor. It was document-ed in the inventory of 1771 which gave a comprehensive description of the works in five rooms (Antechamber, First Gal-lery, Cardinal Gallery, Fireplace Chamber and Alcova Room), and in the inventory of 1784 that described the other rooms of the apartment at the time of Cardinal Andrea Corsini. The former Chamber of Hercu-les and Lica, having taken its name from Canova’s sculpture exhibited there in 1907, is now reserved for museum events and is not part of the current exhibit.

The Appian Way (Latin and Italian: Via Appia) was one of the earliest and strategically most important Roman roads of the ancient republic. It connected Rome to Brindisi, in southeast Italy. Its importance is indicated by its common name, recorded by Statius:

Appia longarum… regina viarum
“the Appian Way the queen of the long roads”
The road is named after Appius Claudius Caecus, the Roman censor who began and completed the first section as a military road to the south in 312 BC during the Samnite Wars.

appia antica

The origins of  Via Latina are remote and already formed by Nature. The road was used by the Etruscans to colonise Campania and was definitely traced back to the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. It repre-sented an alternative to the Via Appia, since, like the “Regina Viarum”, Via Latina reached Ca-pua, touching the valleys of the Liri and of the Sacco. The pre-sent route follows the Roman one. Along the way there were to be found funeral monuments, patrician villas and catacombs almost completely lost because of the heavy ur-ban expansion undertaken during the 14th cen-tury, in the tract that joined Rome to Anagni. The city gate at the start of the road retains the original architectonic features.

TM 085 TM 058 TM 037 TM 043

The small chapel near the Latina Gate dates back to the 5th century AD. And was built on the site where tradition has it that St. John the Evangelist was immersed in a container of boiling oil, a terrible trial that miraculously did not kill the saint. The building was renovated by Baldassare Peruzzi or Antonio da San-gallo at the beginning of the 1500s. Borromini’s work, commis-sioned by Cardinal Francesco Paulucci was carried out in 1658 and was limited to the tambour to which the artist added a high frieze.

TM 047There is a Gothic-style motif with palms and rose windows in pairs on the conical cap. In 1716, the interior was decorated by Lazzaro Baldi, a student of Pietro da Cortona.

SAN PIETRO IN MONTORIO: BRAMANTE’S TEMPIETTO

Built on the top of the Gianicolo, the rempietu (little temple) was commissioned by the King of Spain to consecrate the place in which, according to medieval tradition, Saint Peter, the martyr, founder of the Christian Church and first pope, had been crucified. The young architect Bramante conceived it as a genuine manyrium in antique style, with a central plan and a circle of perimeter columns.

tempietto del bramante The building must have been placed in a large square, which, however, was never built. In spite of the reduced size, the space has been planned in grandiose, monumental style. It is evidently based on the study of the rules of harmony of the Roman Vitruvius, who advised the use of the Doric order of columns for buildings dedicated to masculine divinities or mythological figures famous for their strength and courage. The architect Bramante did in fact use the Doric order for the tempietto, giving it an air of rigour and economy, which is also due to limited use of excessive decoration and the sober harmony of the volumes.

CARAVAGGIO, STORIES OF SAINT MATTHEW – SAN LUIGI DEI FRANCESI – ROMA

san luigi dei francesi Caravagio private tourThanks to the mediation of Cardinal Del Monte from the July of 1599 to that of 1600, Caravaggio painted the two side canvases for the chapel of Cardinal Contarelli in San Luigi dei Francesi, his first public commission. The Calling and Martyrdom of Saint Matthew were both demanding in terms of the depiction of a story in action and the numerous figures. The symbolic role of the light, coupled with the natural illumination of the chapel, lends unity to the whole. With these canvases Caravaggio brings contemporary reality into a sacred scene and into a church chapel for the first time. Characters dressed in the current style participate in the sacred event as they go about their daily life, intent on tavern games. The first canvas to be finished was the Calling. Caravaggio constructs the scene around the gesture of Christ, who points towards Matthew and whose hand position is mirrored by the latter’s. The two groups are unified by the shaft of light, whose origin is outside the field of vision, above the head of Jesus. The light is both divine and natural and also serves as an efficacious stylistic expedient to emphasise the evident contrast between the modern clothes of Matthew and his companions and the few divine attributes of the apostle, who is barefoot and wrapped in a large cloak of antique style. In the case of the Martyrdom, the focal point of the scene is the executioner, who is in the act of striking the martyr. The other characters are placed around the central figure, gradually going further back into the bare space which is the scene of the action. Caravaggio freezes the dramatic moment before the death by means of the light. This is concentrated on the naked body of the executioner poised to strike and on the angel who proffers the palm of martyrdom to the saint. Once it was placed on the altar of the chapel, the altarpiece of Saint Matthew and the Angel, which was done in three and a half months in 1602, was, according to Bellori

Churches in Rome – private tour

Sant’Agnese in agone ROMA

The church is built on the place where, according to tradition, St. Agnes, one of the more popular Roman virgins was put to the pillo-ry and displayed in all her nudity: her hair miraculously grew and covered her. The church, of medieval origins, was rebuilt halfway through the 1600s through the interest of Pope Innocent X. At first, the Pontiff commissioned Girolamo and Carlo Rainaldi (1652) to carry out the plan, but was not satisfied. The following year, the two were replaced by Francesco Borromini, who accepted for the most part, the ideas of his pre-decessors with regard to the plan and the arrangement of the interior (on-ly the altars between the main pillars and the balconies, the plan of the sacristy and the doors flanking the altar of it are by Borromini), radically changing, however, the design of the facade, conceived with a large con-cave front, that reconnects to the shape of the square which is the focal point. The two side campaniles frame the dome with the high tambour.

In 1466 Paul 11 moved two huge Terme di Caracalla granite basins from the original platea nova to Piazza Farnese. Thus the reigning pontiff implemented the first phase in the evolution of Piazza Venezia, which, as the monumental figurehead of the Corso, was taking shape in relation to the gradual building of Palazzo Venezia. It represented the first big urban change in Renaissance Rome and became the theatrical arrival point of the famous race of the Barberi which, in carnival season, started in Piazza del Popolo and wound its way along the Corso with a festive crowd and the richest nobility looking on. A dense urban network of medieval origin linked it to the Capitoline Hill and an area of crowded fifteenth and sixteenth buildings joined it to the Monti rione beyond the Imperial Forums.

Piazza-Venezia-Scuderia-Campidoglio

When the decision was taken in 1882 to erect the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II as a backdrop to the Corso, in the lee of the Campidoglio, substantial changes had to be made to the whole area, which had hitherto ended in the piazza. In 1845 the latter had witnessed the first appearance of a horse omnibus and gas lighting. The next step was the demolition of the buildings sheltered by the monument; this enlarged the piazza, which was extended even further after the demolition of the 16th century Palazzo Torlonia, opposite Palazzo Venezia. Next the Assicurazioni Generali building was constructed, in the style of the Pauline complex; this was placed further back in the piazza. Palazzo Venezia, which had already been commissioned by Cardinal Pietro Barbo as a prestigious private residence in about 1464, was subjected to considerable changes when Paul II was elected pontiff, to make it fit for a «papal palace)). As a residence of the ambassadors of the Venetian Republic in 1564, the palazzo underwent further changes when it passed first of all to the Hapsburg Empire and then, in the Napoleonic period, to the Italic Kingdom, when it became home to the Academia di Belle Arti directed by Antonio Canova. It was to undergo further changes when, between 1929 and 1943, it was home to the head of government and the Great Council of fascism. Meanwhile the outlook of the piazza had evolved in 1911 with the inauguration of the central Monument and the definitive layout of the area. When the axes of Via del Mare and Via dei Fori Imperiali were opened during the twenty years of fascism, the piazza, which was proclaimed the Forum of Italy, was confirmed in its role as both symbolic and geographical centre of the city

PIAZZA DEL CAMPIDOGLIO

piazza del campidoglio romeThe Piazza del Campidoglio, with the long flight of steps leading up to it, is both the political and physical heart of the city. It was designed in its monumental setting by Michelangelo in 1536, under the patronage of Paul III Farnese. It arguably represents the most perfect translation of the concept of the piazza as an autonomous urban space in 16th century culture. In a masterly reinterpretation of the classic concept of the piazza, Michelangelo reversed the outlook, which had until then been oriented towards the Roman Forum, placing the statue of Marcus Aurelius in the middle to face Saint Peter’s Basilica. As background, he devised the complete rebuilding of the medieval Palazzo Senatorio, which rose above the ruins of the former Tabularium, and the side wings, made up of the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo.

Campidoglio and Roman forum – RusRim Original VIDEO and music by Adel Karanov

The latter were completed according to the artist’s plans respectively in 1568 and 1655. Uprooted and set obliquely, they endow the piazza with a greater sense of space, and enhance the perspective and theatricality. The geometric star design of the paving, which was implemented in 1940 by Antonio Munoz based on the plans left by Buonarroti, also emphasises the centrifugal, dynamic dimension of the whole. The robust and imposing plasticity of the architecture adds to the sober stateliness of this area. The facade of Palazzo Senatorio was adapted from the Michelangelesque plan by Giacomo Della Porta and Girolamo Rainaldi, with its entrance facing the piazza, characteristic double flights of steps, stucco facing and row of gigantic Corinthian pilaster strips. The balustrade looking out over the city, with its monumental Dioscuri, was also conceived to complement the piazza, and was modified by Della Porta in 1585.

MICHELANGELO, MOSES SAN PIETRO IN VINCOLI

Moses by Michelangelo in San Pietro in Vincoli Rome Italy
Moses – Michelangelo in San Pietro in Vincoli Rome Italy

The coveted commission of his own splendid mausoleum by Julius II turned into an utter tragedy for Michelangelo, thanks to the continuous interruptions and endless modifications to which the original design was subject. Michelangelo threw himself into the project with great enthusiasm, following the first plan. This envisaged a mausoleum of three storeys decorated with forty statues in marble, and bronze reliefs; the Moses was to form a pendant to the statue of Saint Paul, both being symbols of the mystery of God’s revelation. Having spent a considerable time on producing numerous drawings and studies, as well as choosing the marbles in Carrara, the sculptor was forced to abandon the project and concentrate firstly on the work in Saint Peter’s, to which Julius II apparently gave precedence, and, after that, on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. When the Pope died in 1513, Michelangelo returned to the project, although it had been very much reduced and modified; the mausoleum was no longer free-standing but attached to the walls and it had fewer statues. The artist undertook to finish this second project within seven years, but, in fact, thirty years would pass before the end product of the tomb in San Pietro in Vincoli was achieved, work on this having only been resumed in 1532 after a long interruption. Between 1513 and 1515 Michelangelo worked on the statues of the first two Prisoners (today in the Louvre), which should have acted as telamons to hold up the architrave beside the two figures of Victories, and that of Moses. The latter undoubtedly represents one of the summits of Michelangelo’s art in terms of expressiveness. The rough, nervy quality of the marble surfaces reflects the interior strength, as well as the apprehension, of the prophet of Hebrew law, symbol of the human condition. Hints of antique culture — from the Torso of the Belvedere to the figures of ancient river divinities — blend with echoes from 15th century sculpture, particularly that of Donatello. The figure is seated, the face contracted in concentration and turned towards the left; the right foot rests on the ground, while the left leg is raised with only the point of the foot resting on the base. The biblical figure has a majestic, solemn air in spite of the pervasive feeling of dynamism and withheld energy.

GALLERIA DORIA PAMPHILJ

The Doria Pamphilj palace houses an extraordinary private gallery of paintings, collected between the 16th and 17th centuries. The kernel of the collection was formed after th( marriage of Camillo Pamphilj senior, nephew of pope Innocent X, with Olimpia Aldobrandini in 1647.Galleria.Doria.Pamphilj

The bride had, in 1638, inherited the palace on the Corso and the art collection from her uncle 1ppolito. As early as 1603 the collection already included prestigious paintings by Raphael (Double portrait of Andrea Navagero and Agostino Beazzano), and works from the schools of Ferrara and Veneto. Between 1603 and 1604 cardinal Aldobrandini had also had the upper parts of the palace chapel adorned with six arched canvases on which Annibale Carracci and his apprentices had painted landscapes with scenes from the life of Christ, later moved to the gallery.

A better part of the collection is attributable to the Camillo Pamphilj’s patronage and collecting activities: in addition to inheriting the properties of his mother Olimpia Maildachini in 1657 including Ermina Finds the Wounded Tancred by Guercino, he purchased many works on the antiques market (including Flight to Egypt and Magdalene by Caravaggio); he also commissioned important works from artists such as Bernini, Borromini, Pietro da Cortona, Algardi, Duquesnoy, and several Flemish artists. He also purchased landscapes by Lorrain and Dughet, and many paintings from Bologna that now constitute the largest section of the collection The famous Portrait of Innocent X, painted by Velazquez during his second trip to Italy (about 1649) was, instead, a gift from the pope to Camillo. Other paintings were added during the course of the 18th century: these included two portraits of Andrea Doria by Sebastiano del Piombo and another of Giannettino Doria by Bronzino, and the famous 16th century Brussels tapestries illustrating the Battle of Lepanto (1571).

SPADA GALLERY

Palazzo_spadaThe Spada Collection is housed in the Spada Capodiferro Palace, nearby Piazza Farnese. Begun by Cardinal Bernardino Spada and enlarged by his great grandson Fabrizio, the collection contains precimis 17th c. paintings, arranged regionally and stylistically. It is the only left example of Roman Patrician family’s private collections, because the events of the 18th c. (French occupation) and the 19th c. (Rome became capital) scattered them in larger nuclei. Arranged in four rooms on the first floor, the collection is a consistent whole of art works reflecting the scientific curiosity and the taste of the main client – Cardinal Bernardino Spada. The arrangement of the collection follows the original one: the paintings are arranged in different rows along the walls and the sculptures are placed under them or in the middle of the rooms, while the ancient furniture (sofas, consolles, chairs, mirrors) occupy the rest, creating a space full of art works and furnishings. The leitmotiv of the 16″. and 18”’ c. Roman collections is the relation between modern paintings and ancient sculptures within the same rooms: the modern paintings were sometimes copied and inspired by the ancient sculptures; shown in formal-stylistic variations,

SANTA LUCIA – GALLERIA SPADA

santa-luciaIt is now a canonical model – for example the Sleeping Putto is here represented in three different versions. The building, built during the second half of the 16th c., stands out for the rich stucco decoration of the facade and the inner courtyard: here statues of Roman emperors alternate with ornamental patterns. Part of the building is the seat of the Council of State. The perspective gallery commissioned by Cardinal Spada Francesco Borromini (1653), can be seen through the glass wall of the library facing the inner courtyard. It shows the talent reached by the artist in matter of optics and design. The gallery, in fact, ra • seems deeper than its 9 m thanks to the accentuation of the perspective vanishing point obtained by modifying its structural elements: the flooring is uphill, the walls are convergent, the downhill vault and the columns become smaller and smaller as the bust of the warrior, placed here only later on, is reached. This ingenious experiment proves that the culture investigated every aspect of reality (botany, astronomy, optics). The entrance room has a magnificent floor in terracotta tiles, which has become a uniform reflecting surface with the passing of the centuries. The wideness of the room with the large paintings arranged in three rows helps in viewing them: here is the Portrait of Cardinal Bernardino Spada (1631) — the main maker of the collection — by Guido Reni. He was the cardinal’s favourite artist among the Bolognese artists to whom he commissioned works: the other was Guercino. The gallery contains Death of Dick (1631) by Guercino – a painting with a sharp chiaroscuro contrast, originally intended for the collection of Maria de’ Medici, who was Queen of France in that period. The predilection for the School of Bologna was not an exception during that period; just consider Carracci’s inheritance at Farnese Palace (gallery with the Stories of Psyche, 1592). But the Cardinal stands out for his unfailing choice of the artists; moreover, he was open-minded towards the new artistic expressions of that period.

SPADA PALACE in ROME

Tour in Rome inside the old luxury buildings

The palace was built and decorated with splendid paintings and stuccoes halfway through the 16tth century by Cardinal Girolamo Capodiferro. Purchased in 1632 by Cardinal Bernadino Spada, the building was immediately transformed to house the residence of the important prelate. New decorations were done, even in view of the setting up of the Picture gallery, where it is still possible to admire the rich furnishings, the sculptures and two world maps, emphasising the many inter-est of the householder. Since 1926, the building has been the seat of the Council of State, but it is still possible to visit, in four rooms, the gallery of the cul-tured prelate, with paintihgs by famous artists, including Titian and Guido Reni.

Borromini be-gan to work on the restora-tion of the Spada Palace around 1635. He transformed the grand interior stair-case and built the two spiral staircas-es in the facade fac-ing the garden. The most important work, however, was the surprising Gallery in Per-spective, the wish of Cardinal Bernadi-no Spada, impas-sioned by those baroque virtuosities. The gallery was built in a year, from 1652 to 1653, in collaboration with the Augustinian mathematician, Gio-vanni Maria da Bitonto. The virtual depth of the gallery is about 35 metres, but the real measurement is 8.82 metres! The optical il-lusion was made through the convergence of the planes of the colonnade towards the vanishing point and the upward slope of the mosaic floor. At the end of the recently re-stored gallery, on the end wall, is the cast for a small statue of a warrior of the Roman pe-riod placed there halfway through the 1800s.
